Dear Joel
Thank you for your enquiry.
In order to foster or adopt any child you need to be approved. The two are different but for each, you need to be approved by a Panel of people. This would happen after you have been assessed which takes about 6 months. Given that we are placing vulnerable, often very troubled young people, we are looking for people with experience of looking after children who can demonstrate they have the skills and qualities needed for this. Usually people opt for either fostering or adoption, not both, as the plans made for adopted and fostered children are likely to be very different.
It might be useful for you to read up on the two. BAAF have a good website as do Fostering Network.
I hope this answers your question. Thanks again for your interest.

This has left me feeling pleasently suprised – although my dreams of fostering AND adoption at the same time has now been crushed, I can, at least decide what I want to do with more knowledge on my side. I think I may Foster for a bit, as soon as I have a stable living environment and job – just to get to grips with overnight care of little ones, then go on to adoption.
