Oooer! I’ve got a reply!

January 22, 2009
Dear Joel
Thank you for your enquiry.
In order to foster or adopt any child you need to be approved. The two are different but for each, you need to be approved by a Panel of people. This would happen after you have been assessed which takes about 6 months. Given that we are placing vulnerable, often very troubled young people, we are looking for people with experience of looking after children who can demonstrate they have the skills and qualities needed for this. Usually people opt for either fostering or adoption, not both, as the plans made for adopted and fostered children are likely to be very different.
It might be useful for you to read up on the two. BAAF have a good website as do Fostering Network.
I hope this answers your question. Thanks again for your interest.

This has left me feeling pleasently suprised – although my dreams of fostering AND adoption at the same time has now been crushed, I can, at least decide what I want to do with more knowledge on my side. I think I may Foster for a bit, as soon as I have a stable living environment and job – just to get to grips with overnight care of little ones, then go on to adoption.

It Will Be a Long and Bumpy Road!

A Long and Bumpy Road

A Long and Bumpy Road

Well, today I further looked in to the idea of adoption, I found a checklist of everything I’ll have to go through. I talked to people, I went on a few message boards. You know what? No checklist can cover everything that needs to be done. The process of adoption can only be as predictable as the child you are trying to adopt, which isn’t very predictable at all!

I would like to give a special mention to UK Parents Lounge (http://www.ukparentslounge.com) because within a couple of minutes of joining their forum, I allready had support from members and moderators – helping to set me straight.

WHAT?!

January 19, 2009

Hey!

Well, I’ve been looking in to fostering and adoption – because I want to do something to help kids less fortunate than myself, and want to make them happy! So basicly, i’m going to get the ball rolling early by saving for the cause! Today I went to Lloyds TSB and got a contract account, the conditions being nothing can be withdrawn before one year has passed, or no interest will be payed. At the bottom of each of my “adoption” posts, i’ll post a current fund value & particular fostering & adoption blogs I like.

So, I’ll get the ball rolling then…
